One for the kitchen, one for the bathroom, one for the floors—including wood, laminate, and carpets—one for the toilet, one for glass, one for the granite counter, and last but not least, an all-purpose cleaner. You may realize now that I’m talking about DIY cleaning supplies. But how does vodka fit into the mix? You’ll find out in a minute.
My Journey to Minimalist Cleaning
Back in my early twenties, I moved into my own household. I had no clue about cleaning supplies. My home was a disaster; I bought all kinds of cleaners advertised on TV promising a spotless home. They didn’t work. (Now I know I should have done my part too! 😆)
As a young adult struggling to invite friends over and spending two days scrubbing obsessively before Mom visited, I finally said enough. I deserved to feel good at home, and that required a reliably clean and tidy space—not just when guests were coming.
Learning from the Best
Then came the internet, unlocking a world of knowledge from incredible people sharing their expertise: Kim Woodburn and Aggie MacKenzie, Marie Kondo, Fly Lady, Auri Katariina, and Clean Mama. I’m so grateful for their inspiration and the life lessons they continue to teach.
Why I Switched to DIY Cleaning Supplies & Eco-Friendly Solutions
Dragging heavy, space-consuming, and expensive cleaners home was exhausting. Living in a tiny apartment, I had no clue how to store them properly. I also became more conscious about the environment. A post from Clean Mama inspired me to create my own DIY cleaning supplies, which quickly became a hit among friends and family. They’re simple yet incredibly effective.
Essential DIY Cleaning Supplies for Every Home
Today, I use only four supplies. I still buy bleach for the toilet, but I never use it elsewhere. I also purchase natural washing-up liquid, which is one of the ingredients in my homemade cleaners.
1. All-Purpose Cleaner (Kitchen, Floors)
Perfect for everyday cleaning. Ingredients:
1 1/2 cups water
2 tbsp vodka
1/4 tsp dish soap
2. Bathroom Cleaner
Great for sinks, tubs, and tiles. Ingredients:
1 1/4 cups water
1/4 cup white vinegar
1/4 cup vodka
15 drops lemon/lavender essential oil (optional)
