The Dark Side of the 5 AM Club: Productivity vs. Burnout

Introduction: The Pursuit of More

Balancing a 9-to-5 managerial job, parenting, marriage, and personal growth meant my days were packed, leaving little room to breathe. Desperate to fit more into my 24 hours, I stumbled upon the 5 AM Club concept. Could waking up earlier really be the key to unlocking maximum productivity, or would it lead to 5 AM Club burnout instead?

What is the 5 AM Club?

Popularized by Robin Sharma, the 5 AM Club promotes waking at 5 AM to accelerate personal and professional growth. The idea is simple: ✨ 20 minutes of exercise → Boost endorphins and energy levels. ✨ 20 minutes of reflection → Journaling, meditation, or breathing exercises. ✨ 20 minutes of learning → Reading, listening to podcasts, or planning your day.

While many praise this structure for improving focus, few talk about the potential burnout it can cause if not managed wisely.

The Honeymoon Phase: Excitement & Ambition

I jumped right in, expanding my mornings to include workouts, meal prep, reading books I had long postponed, chores, and courses. The first day, I woke up energized—but by 7 AM, I hadn’t finished everything. I was already feeling the signs of 5 AM Club burnout. Yet, as days passed, these routines became habits, requiring less effort. I was thrilled.

The Initial Struggles Begin

Then, frustration set in: ❌ I couldn’t finish my morning tasks by 7 AM, leaving me feeling defeated. ❌ Exhaustion crept in—by dinnertime, I was mentally drained.

Many 5 AM Club followers push through fatigue, but I started questioning whether early mornings were truly improving my productivity—or just leading to burnout.

The Downward Spiral: A Caffeine-Fueled Crash

Within weeks, I needed double the caffeine just to function. Evenings felt unbearable—worn-out, dizzy, useless. And then came the bizarre sleep pattern: 🔹 Monday at 5 AM. 🔹 Tuesday at 4 AM. 🔹 Wednesday at 3 AM.

Instead of realizing something was seriously wrong, I convinced myself that I had more “me time.” In reality, I was dealing with 5 AM Club burnout, exhausted before the world even woke up. By mid-afternoon, even basic activities—like taking a shower—felt like a marathon.

Reflection & The Harsh Truth

The mental fog took over, ruining my work performance, straining relationships, and draining my joy. Instead of unlocking success, I was burning myself out.

I had misinterpreted the concept—the 5 AM Club wasn’t about cramming everything into the early hours but using that time intentionally. This was my wake-up call: ☑ Productivity isn’t about sacrificing health—balance is crucial. ☑ You must prioritize before adding new habits—what can you let go of? ☑ Rest is just as important as growth—pushing harder won’t compensate for exhaustion.

Final Thoughts: Finding What Works for You

The 5 AM Club works for some, but it’s not a one-size-fits-all hack. Before diving into any new productivity method, pause and ask yourself: 🧐 Do I truly understand the concept, or am I risking burnout? 🎯 Can I prioritize and let go of unnecessary tasks first? 💡 Will this enhance my life without sacrificing my well-being?

So not every productivity habit will work for everyone, but some—like journaling—can truly help with self-reflection. If you’re curious about how to start journaling without overthinking it, check out my post here.
